Fashion advice for men We’ve heard from many of you that you feel your style could use a little boost, but fashion magazines and articles can make you feel a little overwhelmed.  So, we reached out to the experts to gather their #1 piece of fashion advice  to help you get your fashion game in gear!  Plain and simple: easy tips to help you understand fashion, direct from the experts to you.  You’re welcome.

Expert fashion advice for menExpert: Candace Hanna.

Candace is a personal stylist and owner of Style by Candace.  She has worked in corporate men’s and women’s fashion for over 10 years for boutique brands and major fashion houses in New York and Los Angeles. Candace is now a full time personal stylist for both men and women.

#1 Piece of Advice:

‘My advice to men who don’t follow fashion trends is that your fit must be *impeccable*. Whether you’re talking about a $5000 suit, or a $100 pair of denim, if it doesn’t fit properly, it is a waste of your money. Granted, fabric choice will also be a concern, but the most glaring issue I see with men today, is a wardrobe that is ill fitting. I see it all the time with men; suits that are entirely too big across the shoulder, pants that are too long/short, shirt necks that are too large, as well as sleeves that are too long/short, and my absolute favorite; shirt buttons holding on for dear life. We get it, you have muscles. A well-tailored shirt will demonstrate that so much more beautifully than a shirt you’re bursting out of. If you’re working on a budget, that’s no problem at all. You can buy your clothes where you would normally buy (within reason, of course) and invest your money in tailoring and fit adjustments rather than labels/trends. Never risk fit/tailoring for trend – it will never be worth it. I don’t care how expensive a piece is, if it doesn’t fit perfectly, it will always look cheap.’

Advice for Men on FashionExpert: Maria Calautti.

Maria is the founder of Le Grand Chic Italia School of Fashion in North America. The school was founded in 2007. She is a master tailor, pattern maker, and certified fashion instructor. Maria was born in Italy and has been drafting patterns, teaching and designing clothes full time for the past 10 years, although, she started her journey when she was in her teens.

#1 Piece of Advice:

‘My top advice to any man is to have clothes that fit well, this being the most important piece of advice for anyone! The styles may change but with men’s wear the changes are so subtle and it takes a long time for any trend to take hold that really one can wear the same wardrobe for many years and no one would be the wiser. Choose colors that suit YOU and not what is current, choose what is comfortable (not to be confused with sloppy) for YOU; make sure that the garments look polished and they will be timeless. The best thing to do is to color coordinate so that your wardrobe will work together in the best possible way. Always have a suit, sport coat, tweed jacket, formal coat (full length), formal car coat, assorted pants, a few jeans, dress shirts with matching ties, good quality sweaters and of course the all-purpose trench coat! This will keep you going for a good long time. If you are the athletic type then you will need some sports clothes, they are completely up to you what works and what doesn’t, the best is in fabrics that breathe and don’t wrinkle.’

Fashion experts adviceExpert: Colleen Bayus.

Colleen is a personal wardrobe stylist at Styling by Bayus, in the Washington, D.C. area. Helping clients look and feel their best with what they wear, while saving them the time and energy of shopping – often helping men, who don’t necessarily care about fashion, look their best. She also offers closet organization and editing services.

‘MAKE SURE YOUR CLOTHES FIT PROPERLY. This is especially important for suits. Virtually nobody has a body that exactly fits the measurements that designers cut. Find a good tailor, get your measurements taken, and have your suit jackets and pants altered so the fit is just right. This instantly makes a man look more pulled together and polished. Even better? Have your suits custom-made to perfectly fit your body. Take proper care of the suit, and it’s 100% worth the investment. Even if you aren’t specifically “on trend” or “fashion forward” the fit is everything in terms of looking put-together. You can always switch up ties, pocket squares, sweaters, etc. But proper fit? It’s always in style.’

Expert Advice on FashionExpert: Monica Diaz.

Monica used to design menswear textiles and was a menswear designer/merchandiser. Today, Monica has a personal styling/image consulting business, MD Mode, and works with both men and women. ‘My top piece of advice I give my male clients is always the same fit, fit and fit. I suggest they find a good tailor for all their suits and more expensive attire and the rest have the dry cleaner alter. A beautifully fitted garment can make you look like a million dollars. The second would be to buy quality pieces. Key items which are easy and interchangeable. You don’t have to be a fashion plate to look amazing. Building a good wardrobe takes time but when you have quality key items it really is easy.’

Advice for those men who don't follow fashionExpert: Caz Little.

Caz is a men’s stylist and personal shopper at Dashing Hounds. Her career began designing for well-known Australian brands, and later styling TV stars and expertly grooming the panel for LIVE shows. After 10 years of designing menswear, she decided it was time to help men look good, showing them where to shop and what to buy, saving them time and money!

‘Fashion trends are not for everyone. The important thing to remember is that you should dress to impress yourself! When you buy something you need, you buy it for a purpose generally speaking. For example, you buy an iPhone to communicate with friends and family, work and keeping up with the world! When you buy something you want, it may be not necessarily something you need. Apply this rule to fashion trends. You may like it on someone else or in the shop window, but if you wore it, does it make you feel fantastic and look good? Fashion trends come and go and it’s hard to keep up these days! If you don’t see yourself as an influencer, but more of a follower, then stick to wardrobe staples. Keep it simple. Don’t follow trends, stick to your needs and march to the beat of your own drum.’

Advice for those who don't follow trendsExpert: Ali Levine.

Ali Levine is New York’s hot shot turned Hollywood “it girl” for fashion. Interning with brands such as Target and Coach, Ali quickly progressed and is now nonstop talk, and contributor, in USA Today, LA Times and NY Times, and many other outlets. Known for her on set styling for L.A.’s hottest shows, she can also be found dressing the A list talent bustling the red carpet scenes. Ali is an influential fashion blogger and has her own digital channel.

‘Fashion is something that makes the world go round. There are people around the world whose jobs rely on the fashion industry. This, however, does not mean that everyone knows the rules of fashion. As a celebrity stylist, I have learned a lot in working with both women and men. The best piece of advice that I would give to a man who does not follow trends is to remember that the way clothing fits is crucial. Having things fitted and tailored to your body type can change everything about how you look. I would also advise that men should wear clothes without huge brand logos; the simpler the better. Clean cut is the best way to go, especially for those who don’t follow trends. Size and fit is everything. Blending neutrals, and having one statement in a look as their go too.’

What is the return policy for International Orders?2018-03-29T04:29:03+00:00

Unfortunately, due to the high postage costs and customs complexities involved, we cannot accept standard returns or exchanges on items ordered from outside the United States.  As a courtesy for international customers, we can offer store credit which you may use to reorder at your convenience, in the amount of the purchase price of the item. Shipping costs are not refundable. Return postage will be at customer expense. We will not provide nor reimburse for return postage on international orders for ANY reason, since we already subsidize 50% of outbound postage costs for international customers.

Also, please note that store credit is available ONLY if the items are received 100% in keeping with our returns requirements (ie. returns must be received within 30 days, in new,unworn, unwashed condition, with all original tags attached and intact as shipped to you). If an items is returned in less than perfect condition, a restock fee commensurate with the damage will be deducted from the store credit at our sole discretion, up to 100% for items that cannot be resold and must be discarded due to condition (please do not return items with pet hair or smells, or smoke smells – these will be discarded and no refund issued).

We’d love to help make sure you order the right sizes and items the first time, though! So, if you have any questions regarding your purchase or what sizes to order, please do not hesitate to send an email to customerservice@FORtheFIT.com.  Please allow at least 1 business day to receive a response (*emails received after 3pm on Friday may not see a response until the following Monday).

Our shipping costs reflect actual postage costs to your location ONLY (based on weight and distance from our warehouse facility).  Customs fees and duties are charged at the discretion of and in the amounts set by your home country and may be levied on the goods once in your home country.  We have no idea what those might be.  Payment of customs fees and duties are solely the responsibility of the purchaser (i.e. you). The freight or postage company and/or customs do have the right to hold your packages until those fees are paid by you and may only release the items to you once the fees are paid.

Do you ship orders to my country (i.e. outside of the USA?)2018-03-29T04:30:12+00:00

Indeed!  We ship to most international locations.  On the shopping cart page, click ‘Calculate Shipping’ (bottom right).  Click the dropdown box for country and select your location.  If you do not see your country, unfortunately we cannot ship to your country at this time.  Don’t see it? Send us a request to customerservice@forthefit.com and our team will look into adding your country. We appreciate your interest in our products and hope to be able to serve you soon!

When will my refund credit appear on my credit card account?2018-03-29T04:30:41+00:00

Your refund will be processed within 5-7 business days of our receiving your return. You will receive a refund confirmation message via email at that time. While your refund is immediate on our side (meaning the money is removed from our bank account instantly as soon as we click “send”), unfortunately we do not control how long it takes for your credit card company to pass those funds along to you.  It can take from 3 days up to 6 weeks for your payment processor to issue you the credit and reflect it on your credit card statement. If you’d like to know for sure, then please contact your credit card company and offer them the return confirmation details we sent.  They will be able to let you know when exactly they will actually reflect the credit on your statement.

Oh no! Please check your order confirmation message and the pack slip, and compare the item # ordered to the barcode sticker (item number) on the item received. If you have received a different product than you ordered, please contact customer service within 72 hours of receiving the product so that we may assist you in arranging for a return or replacement.

Please allow 5-7 business days for your return to be processed (3-5 days for store credit requests). You will receive a confirmation message via email within 1 business day after the return is processed. Please be extra patient with us around postal Holidays, in late June (after Father’s Day), and between November and late January – Holiday returns and exchanges can be voluminous and it may take us a little longer to serve you during the busy Holiday and Post-Holiday seasons. Thanks in advance for your patience! Also, please note that while refunds are immediate on our end (meaning the bank withdraws the money from our account instantly), it can take your bank or card company from 3 days to 6 weeks or longer to return that money to you. To find out exactly when you can expect to see a refund on your bank or credit card statement, please contact your bank or card company directly and provide them with the refund confirmation details in the email we send you.

FORtheFIT.com will refund your money if you return most unused items in their original condition within 30 days of purchase. Return instructions and forms are available online here. We’ve created a handy and convenient form for printing your return address labels and a return pack slip, too. Order confirmation messages are automatic. Please make sure that you complete all steps at checkout until you see an order confirmation screen with Order # and ‘Thank You’ message. If you did NOT see an order number or thank you screen and you have also not seen a confirmation email (not in spam either), then your order may not have been received and you will need to place a new order to receive your items.

Orders are processed immediately via automated process, and we can only quite rarely catch an order quickly enough to make any requested changes.  If you need to make such a change, please contact us with your request as soon as possible.  In fairness to all customers, all emails are addressed in the order they are received, within 1 business day or less. If we happen to catch your message in time, we would be thrilled to help. However, if it is too late or we are unable to make the requested change, you are welcome to place a new order at your convenience for the correct item, size or quantity and simply return the incorrect items once they are received. What is the most accurate way to check my size?2018-03-29T04:40:03+00:00

The most accurate way to measure your size is to physically measure yourself with a soft tape measure. Our sizing, for trousers, will ask you for your waist and inseam measurements (inches). For inseam measurement, you will want to know the length from crotch seam to hem down the inside of your pant leg (fold your favorite trousers in half lengthwise and measure the inside leg, from crotch to hem for a good estimate). For waist, please measure your actual, natural waistline with a soft tape measure and order accordingly. We do not recommend going just by the tag on the trousers you currently own. Once you have waist and inseam, you will then be able to match this up to the available sizes we offer. Our clothes are designed with short and tall individuals in mind who struggle to find the perfect fit in the mall, usually up to 5’9″ and over 6’0″. If you think any of these sizes would suitably fit, then please check the desired item for available sizing. If your required size is not listed then it is probable that we don’t stock it.
